The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said on
Friday that 13 suspects would be arraigned in court for
various crimes ranging from armed robbery to stealing and
cultism.
One of the suspects, Kamoru Opeyemi, claimed to be a final
year student of Business Administration, Federal
Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti. Also arrested is Godbless Oluku, who
was earlier convicted and recently released after serving
prison term.
While parading the suspects at the state police command in
Ibadan, Oyebade said his men acted swiftly after tip off
from members of the public.
He said, “four suspected armed robbers were arrested in
Alakia area of Ibadan as a result of information gathered
from our patrol men. After their arrest, we found
incriminating exhibits with them and they have confessed to
the crime.
“We also arrested a five-man robbery gang in Ogbomoso
who specialised in robbing people of their motorcycles. Five
of the stolen properties were found in their possession. This
command has also apprehended four suspects who broke
into a store and stole all the goods in it. They will all be
charged to court soon,” Oyebade added.
Opeyemi said he had left school to celebrate the Sallah
festival with friends in Ibadan when he was caught
alongside three others with a locally made pistol.
He said, “I came to Ibadan to celebrate the festival. I was
going towards Olodo area of Ibadan with three others,
Olayinka Olamide, Michael Emeka and Olaniyi Oyeniyi when
we were caught by the police. I belong to eye confraternity
in the school. I inherited the gun from senior colleague in
the confraternity who was graduating. We also use charms
which I prepared for our protection.”
The police said the four were actually arrested while going
for a robbery operation.
Leader of the motorcycle snatching syndicate, Waheed
Kareem, said he was a pickpocket before a friend
introduced him to robbery.
“I specialised in picking pockets and I am from Lagos. I
have stolen motorcycles in Ogbomoso in Oyo State and Idofio
in Kwara State. We started the ignition with a spanner but
after the last operation, we were caught.”
The police said Kareem, Akeem Salami, Abdulwasiu Fingba,
Fatai Fasasi and Adam Laaro were notorious armed robbers
who, apart from committing other crimes, also robbed
Simeon Adeleye at gun point in Ogbomoso, saying they were
arrested while trying to transport the motorcycle to ilorin.
