Obasanjo is a liar and an economic illiterate – Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka, has stated that he has no respect for
former President Obasanjo, who he describeds as an
indescribable liar.
Soyinka talked about the former president on Friday night
when he responded to questions during a programme
tagged: ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’, organised by
Globacom.
Asked to respond to Obasanjo’s assessment of him in the
former president’s book titled ‘My Watch’, where he notes
that Soyinka is good at hunting and wines but a political
illiterate, Soyinka said that he was hardly bothered
because he believed that Obasanjo was a liar.
Soyinka said, “Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion. But the
question is: ‘Who respects the opinion of a liar?’
I can spend the whole night proving that he is a liar.
Obasanjo was once described by an economist, the late Prof
Ojetunji Aboyade, as an economic illiterate. They nearly
went into blows that night. It was Prof. Mabogunje who
separated them.
“So, if an economic illiterate calls somebody a political
illiterate, no problem at all.
“In ‘ My Watch’, Obasanjo told the first lie when he said he
deplored lies. Anybody who said he never plotted to have
an unconstitutional third term in office, even as a writer, I
need a word to describe him.”
The former President and the Nobel laureate have been in
a running battle taking swipes at each other over a
lingering issue between them. Obasanjo had once stated
that Soyinka once vowed that the differences between the
two of them would not be resolved on earth.
Obasanjo had also in his book, My Watch, and at public
events described Soyinka as an expert in wine matters than
in political analysis.
He had said:
“For Wole, no one can be good, nor can anything be
spot-on politically except that which emanates from
him or is ordained by him. His friends and loved
ones will always be right and correct, no matter
what they do or fail to do. He is surely a better wine
connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea
fowl) hunter than a political critic.
“Wole Soyinka is a gifted man. I have always
acknowledged that but he is a bad politician and I
have also always said that. That is my own point of
view. He may agree with it, he may not agree with it.
For instance, I know that if I want somebody to give
me the best wine, one of the people I will go to is
Wole Soyinka and I know he has a taste for good
wine and I said that in the book.”

big as a child. But I dreamt that I would go places
and people would hear my song all over the world. I
also dreamt that Caucasians would dance to my
music. I dreamt I would top music charts across the
world and all that has happened. I have dreamt of
performing in front of thousands of people on a
global stage and I have achieved that. For all these
I am grateful to God,”

Former Pres. Jonathan’s body guards posted out of the Presidential Villa

After months of not knowing their fate, the Department of
State Services personnel who served as Body Guards to
President Goodluck Jonathan have been posted out of the
Villa to various state commands.
Reliable sources at the Presidential Villa said that the
signal for the posting of the over 150 body guards who had
remained redundant following the directive by the ADC to
President Buhari that they should leave the presidential
villa came yesterday.
It would be recalled that following the swearing in of
President Buhari, personnel of the Department of State
Services who had traditionally served as Body Guards to
the president were ordered to leave the Villa on the
instructions of the ADC to the president.
According to the source while a few of the DSS personnel
were posted to the headquarters of the DSS, most of them
were posted to various state commands of the service.
The source said:
“Almost all of our personnel who were body guards
in the villa have been transferred out of the state
House. A new crop of body guards who were trained
for the purpose have taken over. They will take over
from the soldiers who were initially drafted to man
the various beats hitherto occupied by the DSS
personnel. That phase of transition is over” the
source said.
About 250 personnel of the DSS are expected to take over
the job of protecting the president from the military
personnel.
It was gathered that the reason why they were replaced
was sue to the bitter experience during the sallah prayers
when president Buhari was almost mobbed by enthusiastic
Nigerians who overwhelmed the military men that were
supposed to protect him.
President Buhari himself confessed that but for God’s
protection, he would have been mobbed by the crowd that
thronged the Eid prayer ground.

Kathryne Borthwick, 26 – who met husband Monty, 59,
online – flew into a rage after a drinking spree.
A judge heard Mr Borthwick took off his shirt in the
bedroom and demanded: “What about my goodnight kiss?”
Prosecuting lawyer Tim Dracass said: “She picked up an
alarm clock and started to hit him with it.
"The clock broke.
"Mrs Borthwick then grabbed her husband’s mobile and
began hitting his head.”
The court heard Mr Borthwick begged “Please, please” as
blood ran down his head and his furious wife swore and
threw his CDs around their Portsmouth home.
An ambulance was called at 9.45pm and Mr Borthwick was
left with two cuts to his head after the attack on April 18.
Mrs Borthwick, who arrived to the UK from The Philippines
last year, admitted assault with actual bodily harm and
was given a 12-month community order.
The court heard that Mr Borthwick did not want his wife to
be charged but that it was not the first time she had
behaved in this way after drinking.
Portsmouth crown court heard she had quit drinking and
the pair wanted to forget the “nightmare”.
Judge Roger Hetherington said: “For some reason, which is
something of a mystery, you flew at him in a rage hitting
him with whatever came to hand.”

Lagos police officers hate disobedience and don’t take

safer to provide explanation after you have obeyed. If
you don’t want to land in a police station defending
charges of offences you did not commit, then “obey

Lagos Police are known for their brutality

They consider it an insult on their personality and
profession. If a policeman feels your offence will be
better treated at the station, it’s reasonable to follow or

constitutional injunction is an invitation for trouble.

out of trouble by quoting sections of the constitution to
prove that he has not committed an offence is regarded

President Buhari Registers For
National Identity Card

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday,
August 25,  in Abuja, got registered by the officials of
the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC),
to enable him to obtain his national identity card.

card, at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday,
August 25. With him is the director general of NIMC, Chris
Onye.
Answering the questions from the State House
correspondents after his registration inside the
presidential villa, Buhari said the exercise would confirm
the country’s population, especially of those aged 18
years and above.
The president said: “I think this exercise is very
important as it will confirm our population and those,
who are entitled to vote – that is those, who are 18 years
and above. It will complement the exercise of the
Permanent Voters Card.

“So, for those who want their votes to count from
whichever party or constituency, they should ensure that
they and their families are properly captured, like I
have been captured.”

The director general of the NIMC, Chris Onyemenam, in
his remarks, said the exercise is a continuous one. He
said that additional enrollment centres would be
established in all the local government areas of the
federation. The director further said that the
commission is also planning to open such centres in
hospitals, primary schools, and universities.
Buhari briefs the journalists after the registration on
August 25, 2015.
Onyemenam said: “So, every enrollment centre that we
have established remains open forever; they are like
branches of banks. We are taking deliberate steps to
ensure that enrollment centres are opened in each local
government.
“In collaboration with MDAs, we are now extending it to
universities. It will also be extended to primary schools
and hospitals. With the cooperation we expect from INEC
– we are meeting INEC today – it will be extended even
further.“
Onyemenam said that so far, the commission had
captured the data of nearly seven million Nigerians.

With regards to his recent directive that biometric data
bases in government agencies be expeditiously
harmonised, the DG commended President Buhari.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress has set up
a system to enable it properly monitor and assess the
execution of the party’s manifesto , as well as other
promises made by President Muhammadu Buhari during
the campaigns.
Technocrats form the core of the assessment team which
will also serve as an advisory committee to the national
chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Two Indian sisters to be raped as punishment after their brother ran off with married woman

2 sisters have been sentenced to be raped as punishment
after their brother ran off with a married woman.
An unelected all-male village council in India also ordered
that 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old
sister are paraded naked with blackened faces.
The horrific order was revealed by Amnesty International
which said the sisters and their family have fled their
village in the Baghpat district, just outside of Delhi.
According to news site Zee Media, the sisters' brother Ravi
fell in love with a girl from the Jat caste, a higher social
caste than Ravi and his family, who are Dalit, once known
as the 'untouchables', who are at the bottom of India's
caste system.
The Jat woman's family married her off to someone else in
February but she later escaped and eloped with Ravi in
March.
As punishment, on July 31 a village council decided Ravi's
sisters should be raped to avenge his actions.
Since the family fled their village their home has been
ransacked.
Sumit Kumar, another brother of Meenakshi, told Amnesty
that members of the Jat caste were powerful members of
the village council, saying: "The Jat decision is final."
His family fears for their lives if they return. Meenakshi
has filed a petition with India's Supreme Court asking for
protection.
Meanwhile her father has also lodged a complaint with two
national bodies saying he has been harassed by the family
of the Jat woman and by police.
They are also worried about the safety of the Jat woman,
who is believed to be pregnant with Ravi's child.
Amnesty International has launched a petition calling on
India's authorities intervene immediately and protect the
two sisters.
In an appeal, Amnesty said: "Unelected village councils
such as this are widespread in parts of India.
"More often than not they are made up of older
men from dominant castes, who prescribe rules for
social behaviour and interaction in villages.
"Nothing could justify this abhorrent punishment.
It's not fair. It's not right. And it's against the
law."

betrayed, but you can’t move forward until
you recognize what’s going on. That takes
courage and strength; you may surprise
yourself with both when you start to get real.
6. Be Forthcoming When You Start a
Relationship; Ask for the Same in Return: If
you’ve got a secret, it’s probably going to come
out eventually. So if you think things in your
relationship might get serious, you might as
well be honest from the beginning. Likewise, if
you have trust issues because you’ve been
burnt before, you might say from the get-go:
“Listen, I’ve been deceived before. So if I
seem a little stand-offish or a little
suspicious, let me tell you why. I want you to
understand where I’m coming from because
I’ve got nothing to hide. I hope you’ll do the
same.
7. Give a Loved One the Chance to Earn Your
Trust Back — if He/She Deserves it: It is
possible for your friend or partner to change,
but he’s got to earn your trust back one step
at a time while you have your eyes wide open.
Once he owns it, stops justifying it, and shows
that he’s willing and capable of building a
new history, you can start trusting again.

Photos: 24yr old soldier shot dead in her Maryland home next to her 5- month-old child

Karlyn Serane Ramirez, 24, a female soldier stationed at
Fort Mead was shot dead in her home in Maryland this
week. She was discovered around 8 a.m. on Tuesday,
August 25 by police responding to reports of a stray dog
entering the unlocked Severn house, about 15 miles south of
Baltimore, Anne Arundel. Her 5 months old daughter was
found unharmed next to her and appeared to be in good
health but was transported to the hospital as a
precaution.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s autopsy
revealed the cause of death was gunshot wounds. Police
said they are still investigating a motive. They have
conducted several interviews with the deceased's husband
who wasn't home when she was found dead.

Founder Of Oduduwa University, Prof. Ramon, Nominated As The New Ooni Of Ife

The Adesogba family, an arm of the Giesi ruling
house of Ile Ife, has backed the candidacy of a
renowned educationist and businessman, Dr. Ramon
Adegoke Adedoyin, for the Ooni throne.
The family, in a statement issued in Ile-Ife
yesterday, declared Adedoyin, proprietor of
Oduduwa University Ipetumodu, The Polytechnic Ife,
Hilton Hotels and other business concerns, as its sole
candidate for the exalted stool. It became vacant
following the demise of the late Oba Okunade
Sijuwade, Olubuse II on July 28, this year.
The statement, jointly signed by eight princes and
two princesses on behalf of the family, said
Adedoyin, who hails from the Agbedegbede lineage of
the dynasty was eminently qualified to succeed Oba
Sijuwade by virtue of his pedigree, stature,
investments, philanthropic activities and immense
contributions to the human, physical and industrial
development of the town.
They listed the aspirant’s investments as including
First Access Microfinance Bank Ltd; Hilton Hotels;
Odududwa University and The Polytechnic, Ife – all
located within the four local governments areas of
Ifeland – as well as Oduduwa Polytechnic, Idimu,
Lagos State and Our Saviour’s University, Delaware,
USA.
Adedoyin, they said, was “a bonafide son of the
Agbedegbede compound, where he has been involved
in all developmental projects” and possessed the
knowledge and skills as an astute and effective
manager of men and resources needed to make a
success of the office of the Ooni.
The signatories to the statement are: Princess
Kehinde Sijuwade Elugbaju (Nee Adewole); Princess
Adekanmi Adelugba; Princeess Olufunmilayo Busayo;
Princess Adedokun Adedoyin; Prince Gabriel Adedire
Adewole.
Others include: Prince Adebolu Adewole; Prince
Adekola Adewole; Prince Adekunmi Adewole and
Prince Tilewa Bimbo Adewole.

Osun Judge Sues Speaker, Legislative For Refusing To Probe Aregbesola

A High Court Judge in Osun, Justice Folahanmi
Oloyede, has filed a motion in an Osogbo High Court,
challenging the Osun State House of a$$emnbly’s
handling of a petition she forwarded to it.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that
Justice Oloyede had petitioned the a$$embly, calling
for the impeachment of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola and
his Deputy, Mrs Grace Laoye-Tomori, over alleged
financial misconduct.
In the petition, she called on the lawmakers to
examine and investigate the governor and his deputy
over the allegations.
The House, on receipt of the petition, set up an Ad
hoc/Fact-finding Committee with Speaker Najeem
Salam giving the committee one week to submit its
report.
The House later considered the report of the panel,
dismissed Oloyede’s petition and recommended
sanctions against her.
Dissatisfied, Oloyede, through her lawyer, Mr Lekan
Ogunlesi (SAN), on Thursday, filed a motion on notice
before the court.
Her lawyer stated that his client was ready to
challenge the illegality of the action of the House of a
$$embly.
Mr Lukman Ogunseitan, who held brief for Ogunlesi,
listed the respondents to include the Speaker, the
investigating committee Chairman, Mr Adegboye
Akintunde, six legislators and Clerk of the House.
Also joined in the suit is the Osun Judicial Service
Commission.
Oloyede also filed a motion ex-parte asking the court
to grant her permission to institute a legal action
against the state lawmakers over their
recommendation that she should be sanctioned by the
National Judicial Commission (NJC).
In her application, she asked that the
recommendations of the ad-hoc committee be
quashed and that their actions be declared illegal,
unconstitutional, null and void.
Ruling on the application, Justice Adeyinka
Aderibigbe granted all the five prayers sought by the
applicant and ordered that the 11 respondents listed
in the matter be served, while the case was
adjourned till Sept. 3. (NAN)

Fight aganst corruption is not ethnic based - Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says that the anti-corruption
fight of this present administration should not be seen as
one directed at a particular ethnic group in the country.
Osinbajo made said this when some Yoruba traditional
rulers paid him a courtesy call at the state House
yesterday August 27th.
"You hear people saying that the reason that man
is being tried for corruption is because he is Yoruba,
he is from the North, and he is from South South.
We must not encourage those kinds of ideas. If a
person steals, he ought to be punished and made to
return what he has stolen because the money does
not belong to him. The money is what is to be used
for the training of our young people, who are in
school or hospital and for the building of roads.
There is no family in Yoruba land that allows
thieves. If you are a thief, we will expose you. We
should support the effort of the administration to
fight corruption ” he said

NNPC reduces crude lifting firms from 43 to 16

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)
has reduced the number of companies that will handle the
contract of lifting Nigeria’s crude from 43 to 16. The
drastic reduction is part of the Corporation’s
transformation agenda aimed at keeping its operation
small, efficient, transparent and reduction of cost.
NNPC spokesman, Ohi Alegbe said the decision is a novel
move to instill transparency and accountability in the
award of the annual Crude Oil Term Contract for
2015/2016.
He said:
“NNPC yesterday mapped out measures to execute
the 2015/2016 award of contract to companies for
the evacuation of Nigeria’s crude oil equity from
the various crude and condensate production
arrangements.”
In a statement, NNPC stated that it was part of measures
to optimise the marketing of Nigeria’s crude oil and secure
new market potentials. It said the number of off-takers
for the proposed 2015/2016 term contract which would
emerge after a planned rigorous competitive bid exercise
has been pruned from 43 to 16.
The statement read:
“In the days ahead, we shall place advertisement
for the 2015/2016 Term Contracts and the
publication will run for one month in major
National and International print media to ensure
effective message penetration. Later the guidelines
for the selection of new off-takers would be
published and subsequently a special bid evaluation
committee would be constituted to conduct due
diligence on successful applicants.”
He also stated that apart from Oando, Calson, MRS, BP/
Nigermed and Total Trading that were earlier selected to
bid for the new Offshore Processing Agreement (OPA),
invitation was also extended to Forte Oil and Mobil to bid
for the OPA contract.

An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos
State on Thursday dissolved a four-year-
old marriage between Sidikat Oseni and
her husband, Waheed Oseni, over
maltreatment and lack of trust.
The 28-year-old petitioner and mother of
two resides at Ajose Road in Agric Area of
Ikorodu.
Sidikat had earlier told the court that her
husband was in the habit of subjecting her
to vaginal test whenever she returned
home late.
The President of the court, Mr Olu Adebiyi,
who dissolved the marriage, held that all
efforts made by the court to reconcile the
couple failed as both insisted on divorce.
Adebiyi ordered that the respondent should
be allowed free access to his children at
any reasonable time of the day and in a
peaceful manner.
The court president also held that the
children would be living with the
petitioner, saying she was in a better
position to nurture them as it were.
He ordered the respondent to be paying
N10,000 monthly for their feeding and
settled their school bills.
The housewife had urged the court to
dissolve her marriage to her husband ,
citing lack of trust and beatings at the
slightest provocation.
“Anytime I come back home late, my
husband accuses me of infidelity, he beats
me and tears my cloth , it is our
neighbours that usually cover my
unclothedness.
“He also inspects my private part, he
usually asks me to open my vagina to see if
I have gone to sleep with other men.
“I have reported him to his family but he
refused to desist from this maltreatment,
for this reasons I don’t want to continue
with the marriage again,’’ Sidikat said.
However, the 50-year-old husband and a
businessman did not object to his wife’s
claims but begged the court to grant him
the custody of his children.
” My wife is disrespectful, she does not
listen to my words, she also comes home
late and was preparing my meals late. I am
fed up with the marriage too, separate us ,’’
he told the court

Kim K reveals she may have a hysterectomy after her 2nd baby

Kim Kardashian West has revealed she may be forced to
have a hysterectomy following the birth of her second
child.
The 34-year-old star who has two-year-old daughter
North aka Nori, with husband Kanye West - said she had 'so
many' complications during her first pregnancy made it
difficult to conceive a second time.
And if one of the conditions - placenta accreta - returns
it could mean she won't be able to have any more children.
She told C Magazine: 'They think I'll have placenta accreta
again, so if the placenta grows a little bit deeper than it
did last time, then they are prepared to have my uterus
removed, which is a little scary for me.
'I think we're just gonna go day by day, see how
overwhelming it is, and see how the delivery goes.'
The condition occurs when parts of the placenta grow too
deeply into the uterine wall and it can cause severe blood
loss after delivery. It can result in an early C-section
delivery followed by the surgical removal of the uterus,
which is called a hysterectomy.
She said the couple endured a 'long road' to get pregnant
with their unborn son.
She had a 'couple little operations' to address the issues
caused by placenta accreta after the birth.
She explained: 'That created a little hole in my uterus,
which I think made it really tough to get pregnant again.'
Second time around, she says: 'I would go to the doctor in
Beverly Hills every day at five in the morning to get tested
to see if I was ovulating.'
The E! reality star says constantly checking if she was
ovulating sucked 'the fun out of' her and Kanye's
attempts to get pregnant.
'I’m like, "I’m ovulating, get home now!" He’d be like,
"Wait, I’m in the studio,"' she recalls.
But Kim also noted how grateful she is that her second
pregnancy has been easier than her first.
'I also feel lucky that, as of right now, I don’t feel
like I’m gonna get preeclampsia again, which last
time [contributed to] not only the weight, but also
the swelling.'
In the interview she said reiterated that she had been 180
lbs when she delivered North.
The reality star was also candid about how she has become
much more relaxed about the idea of motherhood since
having her first child.
'When I was pregnant with North, I thought, My life is so
hectic - how am I gonna take her to ballet classes and
soccer?' Kim admitted.
'I had these visions of all the things I did growing up, and I
was really freaked out. And when it happens, you just
instinctively know how to do it.'

Nurse stabbed to death by alcoholic transvestite husband

A nurse was stabbed to death after being repeatedly
threatened with knives by her ‘alcoholic transvestite’
husband, a court heard.
Graham Cleary-Senior allegedly knifed Frances Cleary-
Senior, a 49-year-old staff nurse at the Royal Oldham
Hospital in Manchester, after she returned home from
work to find him drunk.
Mrs Cleary-Senior survived the attack and underwent
major surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
But tragically, days before she was due to leave hospital
she contracted pneumonia and died.
In a police statement, Mrs Cleary-Senior described the
prelude to the stabbing.
“He came towards me me waving the knife about,
saying he was going to stab me. I replied ‘go on, do
it, I’m sick of you threatening me to do it...he then
stabbed me with the knife in my chest.”
A 999 call played to the jury captures the aftermath. Mrs
Cleary-Senior says ‘my husband’s stabbed me...please
help’, before her breathing becomes laboured. As police
arrive, a man’s voice can be heard in the background
saying: “It’s my fault.”
Mrs Cleary-Senior’s sister, Pauline Ayres, said that after
the stabbing her sister told her Mr Cleary-Senior had been
‘very controlling’, adding: "Frances was quite a vulnerable
person - she believed that nobody cared about her".
Manchester Crown Court heard that in hospital visits after
the stabbing Frances Cleary-Senior told a detective about
her marital problems, said to revolve around financial
difficulties and her husband’s drinking.
DC Carol Buckley told the court: “Six weeks into their
marriage she said she found out Graham was an alcoholic
and also that he was a transvestite. She turned up home
early after her shift and he was dressed in ladies’ clothes
that weren’t hers.”
DC Buckley said the victim told her Mr Cleary-Senior
prevented her from seeing her family.
The former merchant seaman had been sacked by a
shipping company after he was found ‘unconscious’
through drink.
The jury was also told arguments between the pair were
‘sometimes violent’, that Mrs Cleary-Senior ‘had a black
eye once’, and that Mr Cleary-Senior ‘brought a knife out’
six times, on one occasion hitting her on the head with it.
“I asked why she stayed with him - she said she
stayed with him for love”, DC Buckley added.

Syrian man selling pens on street to feed his daughter earns $37k after picture goes viral

This is great news! More than $37k has been raised in
just 11 hours to support a Syrian refugee pictured selling
pens in Beirut while carrying his sleeping daughter.
In the heartbreaking images, the man offers out a
handful of biros, clutching a plastic bag of more pens while
his little daughter sleeps wrapped over his shoulder.The
photos of the father and child went viral after they were
posted two days ago on Twitter by activist Gissur
Simonarson.
He was then inundated with requests to help the man and
so Gissur, based in Norway, announced he was going to try
to find him.
He launched a Twitter account named #BuyPens and within
30 minutes, someone on Twitter contacted Gissur saying he
saw the man every day around his house.
Incredibly, twenty-four hours later the man and his
daughter were identified as single dad-of-two Abdul and
his daughter Reem, four and a half.
Gissi launched a crowdfunding page to raise money to help
Abdul start a new life for his family.
Amazingly, in the first 30 minutes Gissur's goal of $5,000
was raised.
He wrote: "We have reached my goal of $5,000 in the first
30 min.
"This was never meant as a cap, just something to start
with.
"Let's make sure that Abdul and Reem can really start a
great new life.
"All extra donations will of course go directly to them as
well."
The fundraising total has reached more than $37,859 in 11
hours and continues to go up.

then discovers it had 25 babies
A man who went to the doctors complaining of earache was
horrified to discover he had a family of cockroaches living
in his ear.
Not only was there a big mummy cockroach taking up
residence in his ear canal, but she had spawned 25 little
baby roaches.
The 19-year-old patient, known only as Mr Li, had gone to
hospital after his ear became itchy and painful.
Doctors took a look inside his ear and were shocked to
discover it was crawling with tiny insects.
They believe the female cockroach went inside Mr Li's ear
several weeks before laying her eggs.
Doctors said that had Mr Li not come to hospital in time, his
ear would have been "destroyed".
Yang Jing, a doctor from Chang'an Xiaobian Hospital in
Dongguan, told TVS: "We saw an insect-shaped object
blocking his ear canal completely."
Cockroaches, who are often pitched as the only creature
that would survive a nuclear explosion, are hardy insects
that can survive for months with no food.

Inspector shoots self dead in Lagos

The atmosphere at the Mobile Police Force 20, in the Ikeja
area of Lagos, had been tense since Tuesday after a police
inspector, identified simply as Medugwu, mistakenly shot
himself dead, while adjusting a faulty rifle.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the inspector, who was attached to
MOPOL 20, was the second-in-command to the armourer.
He was said to have accidentally pulled the trigger of the
rifle, which sent a bullet to his jaw.
Our correspondent gathered that on Tuesday, at about
10am, a policeman had brought the faulty rifle to
Medugwu to examine and readjust for him.
It was learnt that the second-in-command to the
armourer collected the rifle, and tried to find out where
the fault was. The rifle was said to have been fired in the
process.
Other policemen in the area were said to have rushed to the
scene and taken Medugwu to the Lagos State University
Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
The inspector, however, died at about 1pm in the hospital.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, a policeman, who claimed to be
an eyewitness, said Medugwu accidentally turned the
barrel of the rifle on himself during the check, before his
finger touched the trigger.
He added that the inspector died as a result of severe
injuries sustained from the gunshot.
He said, “He was the second-in-command at the armoury
in the MOPOL 20. A policeman brought a faulty rifle to his
office to examine. While he was doing that, he mistakenly
turned the barrel of the gun on himself, and he mistakenly
pulled the trigger.
“We rushed him to LASUTH, where the medical personnel
battled to save his life. But, he died at about 1pm. His head
was badly injured. Medugwu’s death shook all of us.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia
Amadin, confirmed the death of Medugwu via a text
message.

Ooni’s throne opens to all ruling houses —Osinkola

The Osinkola Ruling House has disagreed with the Giesi and
Ogboru Ruling Houses on whose turn it is to produce the next
Ooni.
The leader of the Osinkola Ruling House, Prince Olakunle
Aderemi, who led other members of the family to a press
conference in Ile-Ife on Wednesday, said the race to fill
the Ooni vacant stool was open to aspirants from the four
ruling houses in Ile-Ife.
Based on this assertion, he said the family would field
candidates for the stool because its children were qualified
to join the race.
Although the Osinkola Ruling House produced the late Oba
Adesoji Aderemi, who ruled before Oba Okunade Sijuwade,
who died on July 28, the prince said Osinkola deserved to
produce the successor of Oba Sijuwade because the family
produced the least number of the Ooni among the four
ruling houses.
The ruling house based its position on the variation to the
1977 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration which he said allowed the
Ogboru Ruling House to present Sijuwade who eventually
emerged the Ooni.
Aderemi said while the Osinkola had produced four Ooni
despite being the most senior of the four ruling houses, the
Lafogido had produced eight; Ogboru five and Giesi five.
Aderemi said, “ Ife Chieftaincy Declaration of 1980
technically throws open the contest for filling the stool of
Ooni. The provision in paragraph six of 1980 Chieftaincy
Declaration had cancelled the provision in paragraph five
of Ife Chieftaincy Declaration of 1957.
“Osinkola Ruling House is one of the four ruling houses
entitled to nominate candidate or candidates for the
filling of the vacant stool of the Ooni. Osinkola Ruling House
comprises of five male branches from which candidate or
candidates can be nominated for the vacant stool.
“The ruling house believes in justice, equity and fair play.
Osinkola Ruling House is a peace loving one and has always
been a catalyst for development in Ile-Ife.”
Aderemi enjoined Ife kingmakers, who he said were noted
for integrity and justice in their assignment to pray for
divine guidance to enable them choose a suitable candidate
for the throne.
The family also warned that the stool should not be for
sale, saying the family would not allow some aspirants who
had started parading themselves falsely as members of the
Osinkola to move near the throne.
The secretary of the family, Prince Bade Adeyemo, said six
contestants had shown interest from the ruling house.
He stated that 54 contestants jostled for the stool before
Oba Sijuwade emerged, adding that he believed the
kingmakers would be guided by justice and equity in
selecting who would succeeded the late Ooni.
